December 23, 2024

Arc Health is seeking a highly experienced, flexible and independent FNP to practice at the top of their license to serve in northern Alaska above the Arctic Circle for 4-6 weeks at a time for multiple assignments throughout the year. This position is a little different than most of the APP needs at this facility in that this provider would be located at the clinic in Kotzebue, not in the villages. Ideal candidates must be:

  • Comfortable with solo staffing and working independently with additional services just down the hall
  • Clinically capable, resourceful, adaptable, industrious, and personally willing to be flexible, and interested in making a long-term commitment to serving this rural community.

 Practice Description

  • Schedule: 4-6 weeks at a time spent in Kotzebue, Alaska
  • Support staff: Community Health Aides (trained and certified), receptionist, dental health aide
  • EMR: Cerner
  • Further details: Housing and travel provided.

Duties:

  • Provides routine and emergency ambulatory and preventive care services during regularly scheduled hours in cooperation with other medical practitioners including assessment, diagnosis and treatment of routine illnesses (in adults and pediatric patients); management of chronic health problems; primary care for trauma cases, including suturing and casting; emergency care, including starting IV's, establishing adequate airways, and managing CPR and shock; screening of patients; provides family planning and counseling services; provides routine physical examinations for work and school.
  • Maintains accurate, current medical records using the Patient Care Information System or Cerner for all patients seen.
  • Participates in Health Center quality assurance activities.
  • Dispenses pharmaceuticals in accordance with standing orders or by order of precepting physician.
  • Performs and interprets routine laboratory tests.
  • Orders and makes initial interpretations of extremity and chest X-ray.
  • Uses diagnostic instruments (e.g. ophthalmoscope, otoscope, stethoscope, EKG, etc.) as necessary to perform examinations.

Requirements:

  • Alaskan medical license is preferred but not required to start.
  • Current, unrestricted Nurse Practitioner licensure.
  • Current, unrestricted DEA
  • Clean NPDP/malpractice history
  • Current BLS, ACLS certification required.
  • Ability to survive, if not thrive, in colder temperatures with snow.

About the location

This is a comprehensive health facility providing a range of services to the communities in Alaska’s Northwest Arctic region. The facility has a 17-bed capacity, which includes a 5-bed Emergency Department that operates 24/7.

The health center offers a wide spectrum of services, including:

  • Primary care
  • Inpatient care
  • Emergency care
  • Behavioral health
  • Specialty care services such as dental, eye care, and physical therapy

This health center is the hub for healthcare in the region, working closely with village clinics and public health nurses. The Emergency Department is designed to provide immediate, varied emergency care for patients experiencing sudden illness or trauma, with a triage system in place to determine care priorities. For more severe cases, the department coordinates with various flight options to transfer patients to higher-level care facilities.

If you are passionate about rural healthcare and mission-driven to serve underserved populations, we welcome you to join our Alaska team!
