Arc Health is actively seeking skilled a General Surgeon for night coverage in Shiprock, NM for 5-10 nights per month on an ongoing basis. This opportunity allows you to make a significant impact within the Navajo Nation, serving a vibrant community while working in a supportive, team-oriented environment. Shiprock, New Mexico, a small town in the heart of the Navajo Nation, one of the largest Native American reservations in the U.S. The surrounding areas offer a unique blend of natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and rural living.
  • Cultural and Historic Sites: The Navajo Nation is home to several cultural and historic landmarks, including Monument Valley, Canyon de Chelly, and Chaco Canyon, all of which are not far from Shiprock. These iconic sites, known for their stunning natural beauty and historical significance, offer opportunities for exploration and reflection.
  • Outdoor Activities: The surrounding landscape includes desert plains, mesas, and canyons. For outdoor enthusiasts, there are many opportunities for hiking, photography, and cultural immersion. The area's natural beauty, including red rock formations and expansive desert vistas, is awe-inspiring and offers a peaceful retreat.
Facility Overview:
This Service Unit is the largest geographical service unit within the Navajo Area Indian Health Service (NAIHS), serving a diverse population across New Mexico, Arizona, and Utah. The facility encompasses the Northern Navajo Medical Center (NNMC), a 60-bed hospital, and two health centers: Four Corners Regional Health Center and Dzilth-Na-O-Dith-Hle Health Center. The facility provides comprehensive care, including primary care, pediatrics, labor and delivery, intensive care, family practice, urgent care, mental health, dental, and more.
  • Level IV Trauma Center: The Emergency Department (ED) is certified as a Level IV trauma center and as "Peds Ready" by the New Mexico Emergency Medical Services for Children and the University of New Mexico Child Ready Program, ensuring excellent emergency care for pediatric patients.
  • Broad Scope of Care: Inpatient and outpatient services include medical-surgical, pediatric care, intensive care, women's health, pharmacy, optometry, dental, radiology, and public health nursing.
Position Details:
  • Schedule: 5-10 overnight shifts, 4:00 pm to 8:00 am per month
  • Duration: 3-12 months of coverage, potential to extend
  • EMR: RPMS
  • Provide care to adults and children (over 18 months) routine and emergencies
  • Cross cover with Inpatient General Surgery service and admit new patients into the hospital
  • Provide call with consults/admissions from the ED, Outpatient clinics, and Inpatient services as well as local referral services
  • Perform emergency general surgical cases and upper/lower endoscopies as needed
Requirements:
  • Board eligible or certified by The American Board of Surgery
  • Completed residency training
  • ANY Valid state license and DEA
  • Active ACLS and BLS certifications
  • Valid state driver’s license
  • Ability to meet health requirements and pass background checks
  • Clean NPDP report
Commitment required: Minimum 1 block of 5 call shifts (Weds - Friday 5pm - 7am; Saturday and Sunday 7a-7a). As this is a rotating schedule. You must work every month without exception. You may request 1 black-out week per month; we can schedule you where we need you in the rotation, outside your chosen blackout week.

  • Overnight 14-hour shifts (5p-7a / Weds. - Friday): $1920 per night, plus call back hours at standard rate. 
  • Weekend 24-hour shift (7a-7a / Sat. and Sun.): $2,880 per shift; 4 hours gratis included; standard call back rate after 4 hours in-house work in the 24 hours
  • Call back rate: $240/hour any shift
